In 1999, all opponents' eyes were fixed on a Marshall team that had proven they belonged at the I-A level, capturing the MAC crown in its first year and not relinquishing the title in its second. For Chad Pennington's senior year, it was no different. On Aug. 28, Marshall kicked off its season with a tough 13-10 win at Clemson and went on to brutalize every team remaining on its schedule. Marshall went undefeated, captured its third consecutive title, logged a second Motor City Bowl victory, achieved a Top 10 national ranking and garnished a Heisman Trophy nomination for Pennington.

Marshall's move to Division I-A competition kicked off Aug. 30, 1997 with an anticipated match-up against in-state rival WVU. Marshall battled valiantly, coming from behind to carry a lead into the fourth quarter. Then the Mountaineers staged a comeback of their own. Two early interceptions deep in Marshall territory led to WVU touchdowns and a final interception late sealed the Herd's fate. Despite the final 42-31 score, the Herd had earned respect.

The 2001 season's first game sent Marshall to Florida for a Sept. 1 battle in the Swamp. The Gators were ranked No. 1 in the 2001 pre-season polls. The Herd was undermanned, as some key players were suspended two days earlier due to NCAA rules violations. Still the suspensions likely wouldn't have made a difference in the outcome as the talented Gators proved worthy of its No. 1 ranking, dropping Marshall 49-14.
